Rocker Alice Cooper draws a distinction between himself and his onstage doppelgänger. So while Alice the entertainer is known to flail around in a straitjacket at
concerts, Alice the man (born Vincent Damon Furnier) devotes his mornings to
his other passion — golf. “Alice the character could care less about golf — if you
put golf clubs on his stage, he would think they’re a weapon,” Mr. Cooper says. “I,
on the other hand, play every morning.” The 57-year-old Mr. Cooper, who has a
four handicap, plays golf six days a week at his home near Phoenix but also frequently travels for the game. On the six-month “Dirty Diamonds” tour last year,
Mr. Cooper says, he played about 65 rounds on three continents. We asked him to
choose some of his favorite courses.

Dublin, Ohio
Many golfers find this course difficult for its fast greens
and tight fairways. Mr. Cooper likes the challenge and
“postcard scenery.” His best score is a 73 — one over par
— but he says he’s had “many, many middle-80s rounds.”

Pebble Beach, Calif.
Mr. Cooper says he prefers this course to its famous
neighbor, the Pebble Beach Golf Links, because Spyglass
is “designed to beat you up” with a series of long, uphill
holes and deep sandtraps.

Maui, Hawaii
A warm-weather golfer, Mr. Cooper says you’re more
likely to find him in Maui than Scotland. This course,
with ocean views and thick jungle vegetation, is “always
warm, and the wind doesn’t blow much,” says Mr.
Cooper. “I don’t care what day you get there, you feel like you’re playing in the
Garden of Eden.”

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
This oceanside course is among Mr. Cooper’s favorite
desert courses. “You’re trying to hit a shot, and the green
is there, the ocean is the background, and there are marlin jumping out in the background, and you’re sitting
there going, ‘This is unbelievable.’”

Alpharetta, Ga.
Visiting golfers would do well to go here in April or May,
before it gets too hot, Mr. Cooper says. The private course
is a favorite because of the staff’s hospitality, and the
grounds are “totally pristine. ... It looks like they go out
there with scissors and trim,” he says.
